Advik Mareedu of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned the National Player of the Year Award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while
Henry Wilson earned the National Rookie of the Year, the organization announced today.
Mareedu was also the regional winner of the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award, in addition to being West Region Player of the Year. Wilson was the West Region Rookie of the Year and
Paul Settles earned the West Region Coach of the Year honor.
Mareedu repeated as the national champion in singles, one of only three players in NCAA Division III Men's Tennis history who have ever won back-to-back singles titles. He compiled a 43-2 singles record his senior year, avenging both of his losses in NCAA play, one to Ruilin Feng (Emory) in the quarterfinals of the team competition, and one to Michael Melnikov (Swarthmore) in the singles championship match. He was also 84-3 in singles in his final two years combined, and won a program-record 144 singles matches in four seasons, against only 15 losses.
Wilson finished his rookie campaign with a 26-2 record in singles, with one of the losses coming in the fall during the ITA West Regionals (to Drew Goldman of Pomona-Pitzer). His only other defeat was against Division II Westmont, as he was 21-0 in the spring in dual matches against Division III opponents. He also went 3-0 at the ITA Indoor Championships to help the Stags to the team title, and was 3-0 in singles in the NCAA Tournament, including a win in the national championship match that tied the score 3-3.
CMS finished the year 34-2, reaching the national championship match for the second time in the last three years, and the semifinals for the fourth year in a row.
