Blaise Heher of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps baseball team earned the SCIAC Athlete of the Week Award for games through Sunday, May 3, the conference office announced today.
Heher won the honor for the first time in his last regular season week of his career, after hitting 8-for-14 with two homers and seven RBI in a three-game sweep of Cal Lutheran. In the first game of the Saturday doubleheader, Heher was 3-for-4 with four RBI in a 9-7 win that helped CMS clinch the regular season title and the top seed in the conference tournament.
Heher hit a two-run homer in the second inning of that contest to stake CMS to a 3-0 lead. After Cal Lutheran went ahead 6-4, he then hit a two-run single to tie it and swing the momentum back, as CMS went on to take the 9-7 win. He then capped off his weekend with a walk-off two run homer to enforce the 10-run rule as the Stags won the nightcap 15-4 in seven innings, giving CMS its first outright SCIAC regular season title since 1990.
CMS will be the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament and open up play on Thursday at Azusa Pacific against the winner of the Wednesday opening round game between No. 4 Chapman and No. 5 La Verne.
