Columbia University wrestling has reached new heights this season under the guidance of head coach Donny Pritzlaff, who has been named the 2026 NCAA Division I Men's National Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Pritzlaff's leadership propelled the Lions to an impressive 11-3 dual meet record, including a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League competition, securing their first regular-season conference title since the 1981-82 season. The team's momentum continued into the postseason, where Columbia finished as runners-up at the Ivy League Championships and crowned three individual conference champions. A record seven wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships, where the Lions amassed a program-best 25 team points.
Central to Columbia's success was Cesar Alvan, who became the seventh All-American in program history with a standout performance at the NCAA Championships. Alvan, seeded 12th, began his journey with a commanding 12-2 major decision over SIUE's Brock Woodcock, followed by a thrilling overtime win by fall against fifth-seeded LaDarion Lockett of Oklahoma State. Alvan's run continued as he defeated Arizona State's Nico Ruiz 4-2 to secure his All-American status. Despite falling to top-seeded Mitchell Mesenbrink of Penn State in the semifinals, Alvan's third-place finish at 165 pounds was a highlight for the Lions.
The Columbia wrestling program's achievements this season mark a significant milestone, reflecting the dedication and skill of both the athletes and coaching staff. With the conclusion of the NCAA Championships, the team looks forward to building on this year's success in future seasons.
