Cornell University’s track and field program had a notable week at the NCAA East First Round held at the University of Kentucky. Junior Avery Hilliard made history by becoming the first female pole vaulter in Cornell's history to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, securing her spot with a strong performance on May 29. The men’s team also showcased resilience, with sophomore Peter Northrup competing in both the hammer throw and shot put. After a shaky start in the hammer throw, Northrup rebounded to record a throw of 62.88 meters, his second-best of the season. He later placed 30th in the shot put with a mark of 17.81 meters. Junior Pierre Attiogbe added to the excitement by qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, making him the second Big Red athlete to earn a spot at this prestigious event.
In women’s track and field, junior Anika Sukumar concluded the NCAA East First Round with a commendable performance in the triple jump on May 31. Although she did not qualify for the finals, her effort marked a strong finish to her season and underscored her potential for the future. As the Cornell track and field team prepares for the NCAA Championships, they will look to continue building on this momentum and represent the Big Red on a national stage.
